This weekend sees the return of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship – that’s a European Tour golf tournament that unites the biggest champions in the world for 4 days of high intensity competition, and it’s held once again at Abu Dhabi Golf Club until Saturday 19th January.
For those who are golfing experts, there will know players such as Henrik Stenson, Tommy Fleetwood and Lee Westwood who will be playing the 14th tournament right here in the capital.
And it's not just golf that's going on. The Championship Village is back with its awesome haven of activities, entertainment and lots of fun for all the family.
In previous years we've spent hours at the Championship Village because there is so much happening, from activites (some with prizes) as well as lots of food and beverage outlets too – like the Shangri la who have their pop up lounge where they will be serving Freakshakes, cocktails and food like steamed dumplings and BBQ chicken buns.
There are lots of sporting activities outside of golf too, including:
Rugby – Participants retrieve a ball from a foam pit, weave through tackle bags, negotiate a tyre challenge, then hit and roll of each of the standing targets before scoring a try under the posts.
Golf – Participants take a total of three shots into a replica of the 18th green and pin flag.
Cycling – Two contestants each sit on a static cycle, and their pedaling drives replica scaletrix models in a 10 lap race around a specially designed circuit, with points scored according to the time taken to complete the 10 laps.
Tennis – Participants are faced with a set of moving and static targets on a range 4 metres away, behind a standard tennis net. The aim is to hit as many targets as possible in one minute.
Badminton – Participants faces shuttlecocks from the opposite side of the court and return them over the net.
Street Golf – Players must complete a street themed putting course in as few shots as possible
Future Falcons – Youngsters can also take part in the Future Falcons programme, an initiative that seeks to promote grass roots golf in Abu Dhabi, by encouraging youngsters from the age of 8 to 16 to take up the game in a series of different skill challenges. In the Championship Village, the Future Falcons tent will see participants test their skill in a chipping challenge and putting shuttle. The chipping challenge will allow participants to practice their chipping using four targets to aim for on the range. The putting shuttle game will be an activity to help with putting technique and for participants to compete against others in their group.
